🌞 August Insight: Refining Your Path - Mid-year Reflections🌞

Welcome to the IWEP Newsletter's August issue! While many individuals take advantage of their summer vacations, August presents a crucial opportunity for small business owners to evaluate and enhance their marketing and sales tactics. As we enter the second half of the year, now is the perfect time to assess the effectiveness of your marketing and sales strategies from the first half. Let's take a moment to examine and refine our mid-year plans with the following insightful pointers!

☀️ Strategizing Your Success - Tips for Conducting Mid-Year Reviews  ☀️

August serves as a pivotal month for reflection, strategic realignment, and preparation for the end of the year. By taking the time to review past performances and plan for the future, businesses can enhance their marketing and sales efforts, ensuring they are well-positioned for success in the remaining months. Follow the structured approach as stated below to start assessing your business's performance which can help you identify future opportunities and make a more informed adjustments:

  1. Review Business Goals:
Begin your review by asking yourself the following questions:

    • What were your business goals for the year?

    • Have these goals been accomplished?

    • What obstacles have you encountered?

    • Have all obstacles been addressed? If not, what are the reasons? What resources are lacking?

  2. Assess Business Performance and Refine Business Goals :
As the goals you set half year ago may not align with your business's current performance and the economic situation, you will need to assess your business's performance and refine your goals by considering these factors:

    • Are you experiencing any profits or losses in your business? How do these trends compare to your projections?

    • Which KPIs do you use to track your progress towards your refined goals? How does your current performance compare to the industry norm and your competitors?

    • What external factors, such as economic conditions and changes in industry trends, are prompting you to modify your goals?

    • What specific goal do you want to achieve by the end of this year, considering the business’s success so far?

    • Which goal should take priority, considering the availability of resources and marketing opportunities?

    • What lessons have you learned from the first half of the year?

  3. Adjust Strategies:
The market changes from time to time, making it necessary to adjust your strategies to keep your business on the right track and achieve your goals. These questions will help you conduct a thorough analysis.

    • What are the primary factors contributing to your business successes?

    • What obstacles or challenges have hindered your progress?

    • How effective have your marketing and sales strategies been so far? Which one is the most effective one at reaching customers?

    • Are there any emerging trends or market changes that could impact your business?

    • What feedback have you received from customers, and how has it been addressed?

    • Are there opportunities for cost savings or efficiency improvements in your operations?

    • Do you have sufficient cash flow to support your ongoing operation and planned initiatives? If not, are there any financing options and lines of credit available?

    • Have you taken advantage of all eligible tax deductions?

  4. Implement New Strategies:
After evaluating the goals, assessing first-half performance, and adjusting strategies, it is now time to set new or refined goals and outline the specific actions required to achieve them in the second half of the year.

    • Based on the Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound method, set new goals which align with the overall vision and mission of the business.

    • Based on the evaluation, adjust or refine strategies that were not effective.

    • Identify the resources needed to achieve the goal and allocate them accordingly.

    • Develop an action plan to determine the appropriate KPIs for progress tracking and outline specific actions required to achieve each goal.

    • Monitor the progress regularly to ensure resources are properly allocated and benchmarks and targets are met.

  5. Stay flexible:
Remaining agile and ready for continuous improvement and responsiveness are critical to facing the challenges of the second half of the year.

    • Regularly review and analyze performance data against your goals and KPIs, and pivot your strategies as needed. This may involve reallocating resources, refining existing tactics, or implementing new ones.

    • Stay informed about changes in the market, industry trends and economic conditions. Always be ready to modify your product offerings or adjust your marketing approach to address new opportunities or challenges.

    • Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks with shorter cycles, allowing time for frequent reassessment and continuous refinement.

    • Learn from setbacks and failures, identify the lessons learned, and turn these insights to future efforts.

🔎Monthly Myth-Free Zone 👁️‍🗨️

In an ever-changing business environment with misinformation spreading rapidly, making decisions based on inaccurate information can often lead to costly mistakes. Verify facts and sources are crucial to ensure accuracy and reliability of information used to make critical decisions, and minimize the risk of causing financial losses and reputation damage. Always cross-check information from multiple trustworthy sources to confirm its accuracy and legitimacy.

Let's take a look at the selected Biz Myth Busters for this month!

Myth 1: As a self-employed person, I can claim all the food, beverage, and entertainment expenses that I've spent as business expenses when filing a tax return.

Fact: False! There is a maximum percentage of the amount of meals and entertainment that incurred for the expenses, given that the amount is reasonable in the circumstances.

Myth 2: As a small business owner, I don't really need to separate personal and business finances because my business hasn't earned much yet, and it will be easier to use my personal bank account to handle all the transactions.

Fact: False! Mixing personal and business finances together can create complications, as it becomes difficult to keep track of your business expenses accurately. This can hinder the cash flow management and the assessment of your business performance, impacting your ability to make deduction and claims for credit.  Small business owners are advised to open separate bank accounts and use separate credit cards for business expenses to ensure the accuracy in financial reporting.

Myth 3: I am a social media influencer; I don't have to include sponsorships from other brands, gifts from my local and overseas followers as income because they are not monetary.

Fact: False! As an influencer resident in Canada, all income (monetary and non-monetary) earned both in and outside of Canada should be considered as self-employment income and reported on your income tax return.
